Land care group to spend 8m on environment projects

The City of Melbourne’s council yesterday made the decision to spend 8 million Australian dollars over the next seven years to help combat rising seas and reduce the impact of rising sea levels on vulnerable communities.

Melbourne City Council said that the total budget was approximately $700 million over five years and that the majority of this will be spent on water protection, air and stormwater services.

Melbourne City Council chairman Andrew Kneas said the additional funds would help address the most serious areas of concern about rising seas and flood management.

While the money is not new money, the Council acknowledged that the amount needed to help improve flood management and the future health of the city’s coastal environment will be much less.
